Chapter 9 - The Last Gambit

Before Julian could step out of the bedroom, the house alarm blared—a harsh, rhythmic siren that shook the glass windowpanes. Downstairs, the sharp crack of shattering glass echoed through the grand foyer.
""Marcus, stay with Chloe!"" Julian shouted, dashing to the landing.
The foyer was dimly lit, but the silhouette moving across the marble was unmistakable. Arthur Sterling stood near the broken French doors, his overcoat soaked from the rain, holding a snub-nosed revolver. His chauffeur, a burly enforcer Julian had seen for years at corporate galas, stood behind him with a crowbar.
""Julian!"" Arthur barked, his voice ragged, stripped of all aristocratic polish. ""Where is the ledger drive Bennett gave you?""
Julian descended the wide staircase slowly, keeping his hands visible, projecting an aura of absolute calm. ""The police took Vanessa twenty minutes ago, Arthur. It's over. The marshals already have the offshore wire logs.""
""Vanessa is an amateur who let her emotions ruin a three-hundred-million-dollar operation!"" Arthur sneered, his eyes wild with desperation. ""The federal warrants haven't been signed yet! If I have Bennett's files and the hard drives, their entire indictment collapses on hearsay! Give them to me, Julian, and I walk out of here. You keep your daughter. You keep your quiet life.""
""You threatened my wife,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. ""You forced the mother of my child into exile for three years, and you brought a gun into my home.""
""I built this town, boy!"" Arthur yelled, raising the revolver, aiming it directly at Julian's chest. ""I decide who lives in it!""
From the top of the stairs, a cold, sharp voice rang out: ""Drop the weapon, Sterling.""
Arthur blinked, surprised. Marcus was not at the railing. Standing at the top of the marble staircase, wearing a dripping black trench coat and holding a service pistol with practiced, steady precision, was a woman whose presence seemed to command the very air in the room.
