Chapter 2 - Behind Closed Doors

The reception hall remained empty, tables laden with untouched champagne flutes and sterling cutlery. Julian guided Chloe into the bridal suite, leaving Marcus stationed at the heavy double doors. The girl clutched a plush rabbit Julian had retrieved from his car, her breathing finally slowing to a gentle rhythm.
""Daddy's going to talk to Aunt Vanessa and some friends for a little while,"" Julian whispered, kissing her forehead. ""You're safe here. Uncle Marcus will stay right outside.""
""Is Mommy really gone, Daddy?"" Chloe asked, her voice cracking with the heavy innocence only a child possessed. ""Did I make her go away?""
Julian felt an agonizing ache hollow out his chest. For three years, he had carried guilt like a stone in his throat, wondering if Elena had simply walked away from their life together. Knowing someone had weaponized that pain against his innocent child lit an unfamiliar, glacial fury inside him.
""You are the best thing your mother and I ever did,"" Julian said fiercely, cupping her cheeks. ""Mommy loved you more than the stars. Never forget that. What Vanessa told you was a lie.""
Chloe nodded slowly, resting her head against the velvet sofa. Julian waited until her eyes fluttered shut from sheer exhaustion before stepping back into the corridor.
Vanessa stood twenty feet away, flanked by her father and an attorney who had arrived within minutes of the chapel doors closing. She had discarded her veil, but she still wore the diamond ring Julian had placed on her finger six months prior.
""This is false imprisonment, Vance,"" Arthur Sterling hissed, stepping into Julian’s path. ""If you think your family name protects you from slander—""
""I don't care about my name, Arthur,"" Julian interrupted, his voice devoid of warmth. ""Three years ago, Elena’s vehicle went off the coastal bluff. The state police found her car submerged, the driver-side door forced open, and no body. The coroner declared it a presumptive drowning.""
""It was a tragic accident,"" Vanessa insisted, her voice trembling with synthetic grief. ""I was Elena’s closest confidante, Julian! I grieved with you! I rebuilt your shattered home!""

Julian pulled out his phone and tapped the screen. A crisp photograph appeared: a vintage jeweler's ledger dated two days before Elena disappeared.
""Elena didn't lose this locket in the surf,"" Julian said, watching Vanessa's eyes flick toward the phone. ""She had it repaired at an antique shop in Greenwich. The jeweler recorded the pickup. The person who signed her name wasn't Elena. It was you.""
