Chapter 7 - The Message in the Silver

Chloe was sitting up on the bed when Julian entered, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Marcus quietly closed the door behind them, giving father and daughter the quiet dignity they desperately needed.
""Did the bad lady leave?"" Chloe asked softly.
""She did, sweetheart,"" Julian said, sitting on the edge of the mattress and pulling her into a warm embrace. ""She's never coming back here. No one will ever hurt you or lie to you again.""
Chloe pressed her small face into his neck, her tiny arms wrapping around his collar. Julian held her tightly, closing his eyes, thanking God for the first time in years that the fog of deceit had finally lifted. But the central question still burned in his mind: If Elena was alive, where was she?
He pulled Elena’s sterling locket from his pocket. In the warm lamplight of the bedroom, he examined the casing carefully.
For three years, he had kept the locket in his jewelry safe, never daring to pry open the delicate internal seam for fear of snapping the antique hinge. But Bennett’s words echoed in his thoughts: It was a marker. Elena sent it to her as a message.
Julian slid his thumbnail along the hairline groove beneath the small decorative ruby. With a soft, distinct click, the internal backing popped loose.
It wasn't a photograph inside.
Tucked neatly into the miniature compartment was a micro-SD card, wrapped in a sliver of waxed paper. Written on the paper in Elena’s unmistakable, elegant handwriting were four words:
Watch before you search.
Julian’s hands shook as he took his laptop from the desk and inserted the drive. Marcus stood watch by the doorway as the video file loaded.

The screen flickered to life. The video had been recorded in what looked like an austere coastal cabin. Elena sat before the lens, wrapped in a thick wool sweater. She looked thinner than Julian remembered, lines of profound fatigue etched around her eyes, but the fierce intelligence and love that defined her remained undimmed.
""Julian,"" Elena spoke through the speakers, her voice causing Julian's heart to fracture and mend all at once. ""If you are seeing this, it means Vanessa overplayed her hand, and you finally opened your eyes.""
