Chapter 14 - Restoring the Hearth

Spring returned to the Vance estate six months later, bringing with it the sweet scent of blooming lilacs and freshly cut grass. The conservatory where the disastrous wedding had nearly taken place had been completely transformed.
Julian had ordered the sterile, white marble and cold glass replaced with warm cedar beams, expansive sliding wood-framed windows, and vibrant climbing honeysuckle. It was no longer a showcase for high-society banquets; it was a sunroom filled with children's books, art easels, and comfortable leather armchairs.
Chloe sat at the low cedar table, her tongue poked out in concentration as she painted a watercolor landscape of the lighthouse across the bay. Elena stood behind her, guiding her small hand with gentle strokes, offering laughter whenever the blue paint splashed beyond the paper's edge.
Julian walked in carrying a tray of iced tea, stopping in the doorway just to admire the view.
Marcus sat on the outdoor terrace, reading the morning maritime shipping reports. Northwood Shipping had completed its restructuring, clearing all remnants of the Sterling entanglement, operating now with complete transparency and fair-trade logistics.
""We have an inquiry from the harbor commission,"" Marcus said, setting down the papers as Julian joined him. ""They want to name the new coastal rescue outpost after Elena.""
Julian smiled, glancing back through the open glass doors where his wife was playfully dabbing a spot of yellow paint on Chloe's nose, prompting a cascade of childish giggles.
""She'll probably tell them to name it after Ray Bennett,"" Julian said. ""He’s the one running the apprentice repair shop down at the harbor now.""

""True,"" Marcus chuckled, taking a glass from the tray. ""She never did like statues.""
""Statues are for things that are finished,"" Julian said, his eyes reflecting the deep, peaceful blue of the Atlantic horizon. ""We're just getting started.""
