Chapter 13 - Ashes on the Water

The following weekend, the Vance family took their vintage wooden boat out onto the calm waters of the sound. The autumn air was crisp, turning the pine-covered bluffs along the Maine coast into a brilliant tapestry of crimson and gold.
Julian cut the engine near the deep-water marker where, three years prior, an empty sedan had been hoisted from the ocean floor.
Elena stood at the stern, holding a small brass urn containing the legal documents, the forged death certificates, and the false newspaper clippings that had defined her absence. Beside her, Julian held a lit torch, and Chloe watched with quiet wonder.
""We spent three years living in the aftermath of a lie,"" Julian said, taking Elena’s hand. ""This is where it ends.""
Together, they set flame to the parchment. The fire caught instantly, turning the painful paperwork into curling ribbons of bright orange ember. Elena tipped the urn, letting the gray ashes scatter into the Atlantic breeze, watching them drift across the sunlit surface until nothing remained.
Chloe stepped forward, holding out her little palm. In it was Elena’s silver locket, now cleaned and restored to a brilliant shine.
""Can I wear it now, Mommy?"" Chloe asked.
Elena knelt down, unhooking the delicate silver clasp. Inside the locket, the micro-SD card had been replaced with a tiny photograph—a picture taken just two days ago of the three of them sitting by the seaside fireplace, laughing together under the morning sun.

""It was always yours, my sweet girl,"" Elena said, fastening the necklace around Chloe’s neck. ""It will keep you safe wherever you go.""
Chloe looked down at the silver heart resting against her woolen sweater and beamed, hugging her mother around the neck. Julian wrapped his arms around both of them, feeling the steady rhythm of the boat rocking gently against the tide. The water was no longer a graveyard. It was just the sea, vast and clean.
