Chapter 8 - The Ghost Speaks

Julian reached out, his fingertips grazing the screen where Elena’s image rested. Beside him, Chloe gasped, her little hands clapping over her mouth. ""Mommy?"" she whispered.

""My sweet Chloe,"" Elena’s recorded voice continued, tears shimmering in her eyes on the screen. ""And Julian... my brave, stubborn husband. I am so sorry for the darkness I left you in. When I discovered what the Sterling family was doing through Northwood Maritime—laundering cartel funds through our container ships—I went to Arthur. That was my fatal mistake.""

Elena drew a shaky breath in the recording, looking directly into the camera lens.

""Arthur didn't just know; he orchestrated it. And Vanessa was his lieutenant. When I refused to sign over my family voting shares, they made it clear that Chloe would be the casualty if I went to the federal authorities. The car tampering was meant to end me, but Ray Bennett warned me minutes before I left the office. I had to let them believe they won. If I died, the shares remained tied in probate until Chloe turned eighteen. If I stayed alive openly, they would have eliminated both of us.""

Julian felt a cold shiver run down his spine. The insidious depth of the Sterlings' plot wasn't just greed; it was systematic predation.

""For three years,"" Elena said, her voice growing firm with resolve, ""I've been working with the Southern District U.S. Attorney’s office under protective witness protocol. I couldn't reach out to you, Julian. Vanessa had your communications monitored, your home bugged, and your foundation under financial surveillance. Any contact would have compromised the indictment.""

She paused, offering a soft, heartbreaking smile.

""Tomorrow morning, federal marshals will execute search warrants across twelve Sterling properties. The trap is sprung. But I needed Chloe to be safe before the walls came down. If you have this locket, it means the wedding didn't happen. Meet me where we first watched the northern lights, Julian. Bring our daughter home.""

The screen faded to black, leaving a coordinate stamp on the final frame: Latitude 44.3876° N, Longitude 68.2039° W—Bar Harbor, Maine.

Julian slammed the laptop shut. He looked at Marcus, whose jaw was set in granite.

""Marcus, prepare the private jet,"" Julian commanded. ""We leave in two hours.""
