Chapter 1 - The Altar of Deceit

The glass conservatory felt like a gilded cage. White orchids hung in delicate cascades, but to Julian Vance, the air smelled like smoke. In his palm, the cold sterling silver locket dug sharp corners into his skin. Engraved on the back were two letters: E.V.—Elena Vance, his wife, who had vanished beneath the churn of black harbor water three years ago.

""Julian, please,"" Vanessa murmured, her manicured fingers grazing his sleeve. Her lace gown rustled softly against the marble floor. To the two hundred high-society guests filling the mahogany pews, she was the epitome of grace—a devoted stepmother-to-be soothing a stressed groom. Only Julian saw the slight tremor along her jaw, the twitch near her left eyebrow that gave away her calculated terror.

""Chloe,"" Julian said softly, kneeling back down so he was eye-level with his six-year-old daughter. He kept his voice steady, wrapping an arm around her small, trembling shoulders. ""Where did you get this?""

Chloe glanced toward Vanessa, her hazel eyes glistening with unshed tears. ""Aunt Vanessa took it from the locked drawer in your study last night. She gave it to me behind the hedges. She said... she said Mommy left because I was loud, and if I walked down the aisle today, Mommy would stay dead forever.""

A collective gasp rippled through the front row. Vanessa’s mother stiffened in her lavender silk dress.

Vanessa gave a delicate, breathless laugh, looking around at the guests as if sharing an affectionate joke. ""Children have such wild imaginations when they're overwhelmed, darling. Sweetheart, you must have dreamed that. Come here, let's fix your ribbon.""

""Don't touch her,"" Julian said.

The tone was not loud, but it cut through the conservatory like a blade through silk. He stood up slowly, towering over the woman he had promised to protect. The naive grief that had blinded him for thirty-six months vanished in a single breath. He turned toward his best man and lifelong friend, Marcus, who stood near the altar with an unreadable expression.

""Shut the front gates,"" Julian ordered calmly. ""No one leaves this chapel.""

""Julian, what is the meaning of this?"" Arthur Sterling, Vanessa’s influential father, rose indignantly from his front-row seat. ""You are embarrassing my daughter on her wedding day!""

Julian didn't blink. He slid Elena’s locket into his inner breast pocket, right next to his heart, and looked Vanessa directly in the eyes.

""The ceremony is over,"" Julian said. ""Now, Vanessa. Tell me why my late wife's personal effects were in your trunk before she ever went into the water.""

The color drained from Vanessa’s face, leaving behind the pale mask of a cornered predator.
