Chapter 7: Breach at the Gates

The sound cut through the quiet morning air like a jagged blade. On the sofa, Chloe let out a sharp cry of terror, dropping her yellow crayon and scrambling backward into my arms. I pulled her small body tight against my chest, burying her face as another sickening crunch of metal echoed from the front of the estate.
Julian was on his feet instantly, his dark eyes hardening into cold glass. The prominent tattoo on his neck flexed as he spun toward the heavy oak doors of the study. "Stay here. Do not unlock this door under any circumstances."
"Julian, wait—" I started, but he was already moving. He yanked open the study door, his stride long and purposeful as he headed down the hallway toward the grand foyer.
Through the tall leaded windows of the study, I watched the chaotic scene unfold on the gravel drive. A heavy black sedan had deliberately plowed through the automated wrought-iron perimeter gates, its front bumper crumpled and hissing steam into the cool morning air. From the driver's side stepped Elena. She wasn't wearing her usual polished society attire; her hair was disheveled, her designer trench coat flying open as she marched straight toward the front double doors with a manic, unhinged intensity in her stride.
Before she could reach the brass knocker, the main double doors swung wide open. Julian stood framed in the threshold, blocking the entrance completely. He didn't raise his voice, but his physical presence alone stopped her dead in her tracks several feet away.
"Turn around, Elena," Julian said, his tone carrying an absolute, lethal finality.
"You think you can humiliate me?" Elena shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a trembling finger at his chest. "You think some nameless nobody and her brat are going to ruin everything I've built? I know things about your corporate accounts, Julian. I know how the foundation funds are structured. I will tear your empire down to dust before I let you walk away from me!"
"You're trespassing on private property," Julian replied, taking a slow, deliberate step forward onto the stone porch. "And you just committed felony destruction of municipal property with that car. The police are already five minutes out."
"You bastard!" Elena lunged forward, her nails clawing toward his face with sudden, animalistic fury.

Julian moved with blinding speed, catching her wrist mid-air with one hand and twisting her arm back with controlled, authoritative force. But in her blind thrashing, a heavy silver-plated decorative urn resting on the exterior stone pedestal tipped over, crashing down directly toward the edge of the step where Julian stood. He shoved Elena back hard against the hood of her wrecked sedan just as the heavy metal urn shattered across the stone, a sharp jagged edge slicing deep across the side of his forearm as he shielded the doorway.
Dark red blood welled instantly through the fabric of his black button-up shirt, staining the cuff a deep, wet crimson.
