Chapter 11: The Powder Room Confrontation

Julian’s stride was swift and silent as he crossed the terrace, placing himself squarely between Elena and me before she could take another step. The raw, terrifying fury radiating from him made the air in the semi-private alcove drop several degrees.

"Get out," Julian said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that carried more menace than a shout. "If you are breathing the air in this building in thirty seconds, I won't call the police. I'll handle you myself."

Elena’s manic laugh was high and trembling. "You're protecting a nobody, Julian! You're throwing away a dynasty for a cheap surrogate!" She lunged forward, her hand darting toward her designer clutch to retrieve something concealed inside.

Before she could pull out the small digital recorder she had been waving, I pressed the activation button on the small device hidden securely in the pocket of my gown—a secondary backup recorder Marcus had insisted I carry. Every venomous word she had just spat, every threat to our safety and Chloe’s custody, was captured in crisp, crystal clarity.

"Security," Julian barked into his lapel communicator, his eyes never leaving Elena's face. "Terrace alcove, west wing. Code red. Remove her immediately and ensure the local precinct is notified of a direct probation violation."

Within seconds, two heavy-set estate guards flanked Elena, their large hands gripping her arms as she began to scream curses, thrashing against them with a pathetic, desperate fury. As they dragged her back through the service doors, the glittering crowd of socialites watched in stunned, paralyzed silence, the final remnants of her social standing evaporating under the harsh lights of the ballroom.

Julian turned back to me instantly, his hands gripping my shoulders as he checked me over for any sign of harm. "Are you alright? Did she touch you?"

"I'm fine," I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs as the adrenaline slowly began to recede. I looked up at him, a small, triumphant smile touching the corners of my mouth. "And I got every single word on record."

He let out a sharp, breathless laugh, pulling me hard against his chest and wrapping his arms around me in front of the entire glittering room. The gesture was public, absolute, and completely unashamed.

"Let's go home," he whispered into my hair.

"Let's go home," I agreed.
