Chapter 2: Shadows Beneath the Surface

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate study remained locked against the outside world, but the real damage wasn't outside—it was already inside the walls. Julian paced the length of the Persian rug, his boots clicking softly on the floorboards. His black shirt sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, exposing the intricate black ink of his tattoos and the steady, rhythmic pulse in his wrist above the luxury timepiece.

"Show me," Julian said, stopping abruptly to look down at me where I sat on the edge of the leather armchair. Chloe had finally exhausted herself into a fitful sleep on the adjoining sofa, wrapped in a heavy wool throw blanket.

I hesitated, my fingers tracing the silver ring on my left hand. For months, I had kept every bruise hidden, every tear swallowed, out of sheer self-preservation. But Julian’s demand wasn't a casual inquiry; it was an ultimatum issued by a man realizing his empire had been infiltrated by a viper.

"You don't want to see," I murmured, staring at the floor.

"I need to see," he corrected, kneeling before me so our eyes were level. His voice lost its hard edge, softening into something dangerously tender. "Every piece of it. Don't protect me from my own blindness."

Slowly, I reached up and unbuttoned the top two buttons of my high-collared silk blouse, sliding the fabric slightly off my right shoulder. Faint, yellowish-purple bruises—the unmistakable shape of manicured fingers pressing deep into flesh—marked my collarbone.

Julian went entirely still. The air seemed to leave his lungs all at once. His large hand hovered just millimeters from my skin, his fingertips trembling slightly before he pulled back, closing his eyes as if physical contact might shatter him. When he opened them again, the dark irises were swimming with a dark, incandescent rage.

"She did this," he stated, not as a question, but as a death sentence.

"She said it was a reminder of my place," I whispered, pulling my collar back up. "She told me that if I ever told you about the visits, she would frame me for neglect, make sure child services took Chloe away, and leave me with nothing. She knew you were traveling constantly. She used your absence as a weapon."

Julian stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the wood. He grabbed his phone from the desk, his thumb violently punching a number. He didn't step away; he wanted me to hear every word.

The phone rang three times before a smooth, polished voice answered on the other end. "Julian, darling. I wasn't expecting you to call so late. Are the acquisition papers signed?"

"Get your things out of your townhome," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of any human warmth.

A pause echoed through the receiver. "What? Julian, what are you talking about? We have a charity gala tomorrow night. The press is already—"

"I know what you've been doing in my house," Julian interrupted, his tone dropping an octave. "I know about the girl. I know about the bruises. If you are within five miles of my estate by midnight, I won't just ruin your social standing. I will destroy everything your family has built."

May you like

"Julian, you're being hysterical, someone has clearly been lying to you, that woman—"

He ended the call, sliding the phone into his pocket with a definitive click. He looked down at me, his jaw set like granite. "Pack your bags. You and Chloe are moving into the master suite tonight. No arguments."
