Chapter 3: The Uninvited Guest

The morning sun filtered through the leaded glass windows of the grand salon, casting long, geometric shadows across the marble floor. I sat on a velvet settee, watching Chloe stack wooden blocks into a wobbly tower. She was quieter today, her eyes darting toward the heavy double doors every time a floorboard creaked in the corridor.
Julian had left at dawn to meet with his legal counsel and freeze out Elena’s corporate assets, leaving strict instructions that the estate remained sealed. But security gates and digital locks meant nothing to a woman who believed she still owned the room.
The heavy oak doors swung open without a knock.
Elena stood in the entryway, impeccably dressed in a tailored cream designer pantsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon. Her face was a mask of cold porcelain perfection, her lips painted a sharp, defiant red. She didn't look like a woman caught in a scandal; she looked like an invader surveying conquered territory.
"You really thought a few bedtime stories from a traumatized toddler would change things, didn't you?" Elena asked, her voice carrying a smooth, venomous cadence as she stepped across the threshold.
I stood up immediately, placing my body subtly between Elena and Chloe, who had frozen with a wooden block in her hand. "You aren't permitted to be here. Julian revoked your access."
Elena let out a short, dry laugh, walking toward us with slow, deliberate steps. The sound of her heels clicking against the marble echoed ominously in the large room. "Julian is emotional, and emotional men make mistakes. He’ll cool down by tomorrow. And when he realizes that marrying into my family is the only way his next merger goes through, he’ll beg me to come back."
"He saw the bruises, Elena," I said, my voice steadying despite the cold knot tightening in my stomach. "He knows what you did to me. And he knows what you whispered to my daughter."
Elena stopped three feet away, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure malice. The mask slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the desperate, cruel narcissism underneath. "He’s blind, just like all men of his stature. You think a pretty face and a few tears will make him build a life with a nobody like you? You’re a placeholder. A temporary inconvenience."
She leaned in close, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper that only I could hear. "And if you think you’ve won, just wait until I dismantle your custody rights piece by piece. I have judges in my pocket, and you have nothing. I will take that child away so fast your head will spin."

Before I could answer, a heavy shadow fell across the doorway.
Julian stood in the frame, his dark shirt sleeves rolled up, his eyes fixed on Elena with a terrifying, absolute stillness. He hadn't made a sound as he approached, but the air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees.
