Chapter 4: The Discovery Behind the Walls

Elena spun around at the sound of the shadow, her polished composure instantly snapping back into place like a stretched rubber band. A bright, practiced smile flickered across her lips as she turned to face Julian, her hands gesturing gracefully.
"Julian, darling," Elena purred, stepping forward as if nothing had happened. "I came to clear up this absurd misunderstanding. Some deeply disturbed lies have been whispered into your ear, and—"
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply held up his left hand, the silver luxury wristwatch catching the morning light, and pointed two fingers toward the grand entrance.
"Leave," Julian said.
"Julian, let's be rational. We have a public image to maintain, the foundation board is meeting on Thursday, and—"
"If you are still breathing air inside my property in thirty seconds," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, lethal hum that vibrated through the floorboards, "I won't have security remove you. I will personally carry you out and drop you on the highway."
Elena’s face flushed a mottled red, her eyes darting between Julian and me with unmasked hatred. "You're throwing away an empire for a stray," she hissed, her voice sharp before she turned on her heel, her designer heels clicking furiously against the marble as she stormed out of the estate.
The heavy doors slammed shut behind her, the echo reverberating through the vast hallway.
Chloe let out a small gasp, dropping her wooden block. I rushed over, kneeling beside her and pulling her small body into my arms, burying my face in her dark wavy hair. Julian stood frozen in the center of the room, his chest heaving slightly as he stared at the spot where Elena had stood.
"She's gone," Julian said quietly, walking over and dropping to one knee beside us. He placed a large, calloused hand gently on my shoulder, his thumb brushing my skin. "She's never setting foot in here again. I give you my word."
"She won't stop, Julian," I said, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "You heard her. She has connections. She thinks she owns everything around us."
"Let her try," Julian replied, his jaw tightening. He stood up abruptly, extending a hand to help me up. "Come with me. There’s something else you need to see."
He led us down the opposing corridor, away from the grand salon, deep into the older, reinforced wing of the estate where the architectural blueprints didn't quite match the interior walls. He stopped before a decorative wood-paneled wall, pressing his thumb against a discreet brass seam. With a soft pneumatic hiss, a hidden access panel slid open, revealing a narrow utility crawlspace filled with thick bundles of black cabling.
I stepped closer, holding Chloe's hand. Inside the dark recess, attached directly to a digital routing hub, sat a small, unmarked black transmission box with a blinking blue LED light. A thin wire snaked upward through the ceiling joists directly toward Chloe’s nursery overhead.

Julian stared at the blinking light, his face draining of all color. The prominent tattoo on his neck pulsed with his racing heartbeat.
"She wasn't just visiting," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying realization. "She was watching every single second."
