Chapter 10: The Charity Gala Evening

The grand ballroom of the city’s premier arts foundation glittered with crystal chandeliers and cascading arrangements of white orchids, a sea of affluent socialites and high-ranking executives mingling beneath the arched ceilings. Flashbulbs popped near the entrance as local press corps clamored to capture arrivals, eager for any glimpse of public figures following the sudden, explosive downfall of Elena Vance's social empire.
When Julian and I stepped across the threshold, the ambient murmur of the room seemed to drop by half. Dressed in a classic midnight-blue gown that mirrored the quiet elegance of the evening, I kept my head held high, my hand resting securely in the crook of Julian’s arm. He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit, the dark ink of his neck tattoo just visible above his crisp collar, a quiet symbol of unyielding strength amidst the glittering superficiality of the elite.
"Look at them," Julian murmured close to my ear, his lips brushing my temple as we navigated toward the center of the floor. "They don't know whether to applaud or run."
"Let them talk," I replied, offering a polite, composed smile to a passing city councilman who quickly averted his gaze. "We aren't hiding anymore."
The transformation in Julian’s public stance over the past week had sent shockwaves through the philanthropic community. By appearing together at the foundation's annual gala, Julian was making an unambiguous statement: we were a family, and our presence here was permanent. The whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass, but neither of us broke stride.
As we paused near a terrace overlooking the city skyline, Julian stepped away for a brief moment to speak with the foundation's director about restructuring corporate sponsorships. I stood alone by the glass balustrade, taking a slow sip of sparkling water, enjoying the cool night air that drifted in from the balcony.
"You look entirely out of place here, darling," a sharp, venomous voice cut through the ambient jazz music.
I froze. Standing at the edge of the shadow cast by a marble pillar was Elena. She was dressed in stark black, her hair pinned back with severe precision, though her eyes were wild and bloodshot, the carefully manicured facade completely shattered. She had bypassed security through a service corridor, her posture rigid with desperate fury.
"You shouldn't be here, Elena," I said, my voice dropping an octave as I planted my feet firmly against the stone floor. "The restraining order covers this entire district."
May you like
Elena stepped closer, a cruel, mocking smile twisting her lips. "Papers don't mean a damn thing when everyone in this room owes my family their careers. You think Julian actually loves you? You're just a temporary shelter from his guilt. The second I expose what you really—"
Before she could finish her threat, the heavy glass doors behind us swung open with a resounding crash, and Julian stepped back onto the terrace, his dark eyes locking onto Elena with absolute, freezing lethalness.
