Chapter 5: The Digital Proof

The blue light blinked in the dark cavity of the wall with a rhythmic, indifferent pulse. I stared at it, the small mechanical click of the routing hub sounding entirely too loud in the quiet hallway. Chloe pressed her face into the fold of my skirt, her little fingers tangling in the pale yellow tulle. She didn't understand the wires, but she understood the sudden rigidity in Julian’s shoulders and the way his breathing had grown shallow and heavy.
Julian reached into the narrow crawlspace, his fingers brushing against the cold plastic casing of the transmitter. On his wrist, the silver luxury wristwatch caught the dim light of the corridor sconces, glinting sharply as he pulled the device free from the digital port. The wires hung limp, disconnected.
"She used the guest network," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like winter air blown across the skin. He didn't look at me; his eyes were fixed on the black box in his palm. "Every guest who comes through these gates logs onto a dedicated access point. I gave her the credentials months ago under the assumption that wedding planning required coordination. She turned my own network into a surveillance feed."
"Can you trace it?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, terrified that even normal sound waves might shatter what little safety we had left.
"I don't need to trace it," Julian answered, turning sharply on his heel. He pulled his phone from his pocket with his free hand, his thumb swiping across the screen with practiced, ruthless speed. "The routing hub logs every IP address tied to active streams. Look here." He angled the screen toward me. A secondary application displayed a live data stream pinging an external tablet device registered under Elena’s personal foundation email. "The feed was routing directly to her study at the city townhouse."
Without another word, Julian scooped Chloe up into his free arm, settling her securely against his black button-up shirt. She whimpered softly, burying her tear-stained face into his neck, right beside the prominent dark tattoo that coiled along his collarbone. Julian murmured something low and soothing against her dark wavy hair, his free hand gripping mine with a force that promised absolute protection.
"We're going to the main study," Julian said, his jaw locked. "I am ending this tonight. Publicly, legally, and permanently. You and Chloe are never looking over your shoulder again."
We moved down the long corridor together, leaving the dark crawlspace open behind us. The heavy oak door of the study clicked shut, sealing us inside a fortress of books, leather, and hard concrete decisions. Julian sat me down in a wingback chair near the hearth before striding to his mahogany desk. He picked up his desk phone, tapped the speakerphone button, and dialed a direct extension.

"Get public relations on the line," Julian ordered the moment the secretary answered. "Cancel all upcoming joint media appearances with Elena Vance effective immediately. Issue a statement that our engagement is dissolved due to irreconcilable personal conduct. Do not take calls from her counsel. If her representatives call, direct them straight to our legal team."
He slammed the phone down onto the cradle. The sound echoed through the quiet room like a gunshot, signaling the definitive point of no return.
