Chapter 9: The Price of Falsehood**

Officers swarmed the warehouse, pinning Sterling to the floor and snapping zip-ties around his wrists.
Clara scrambled backward on her hands and knees until her back hit a stack of wooden pallets. She looked up at Vincent, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The illusion was completely destroyed.
""Vincent... please,"" she sobbed, trying once more to muster the soft, helpless voice that had manipulated him for a thousand days. ""He forced me into this. Sterling had debts over my family's head. I wanted to tell you... I fell in love with you, Vincent. You must believe me!""
Vincent looked down at her. For three years, a single tear from this woman would have torn his heart apart. He would have moved mountains, spent millions, sacrificed his own health to bring a smile to her face.
Now, he felt nothing but a quiet, clean pity.
""You know what the worst part is, Clara?"" Vincent said, his voice carrying clearly over the shouting of the arresting officers. ""I didn't love you because you were beautiful. I loved you because I thought your spirit was unbreakable despite what happened to you. I thought you were the strongest person I knew.""
He knelt down slightly, locking eyes with her.
""It turns out you were just a ghost. A hollow script written by a thief.""
Two female officers approached, pulling Clara roughly to her feet and placing handcuffs on her wrists. As they read her her rights, Clara stopped crying. Her face hardened into a mask of pure, bitter defeat.
""You'll never recover that money, Vincent,"" she hissed through clenched teeth.

""Keep the money,"" Vincent replied calmly, watching the officers lead her toward the squad cars. ""I just bought something far more valuable.""
