Chapter 5: Unraveling the Web**

Morning came with the harsh chime of Vincent’s phone. It was Marcus, his head of corporate intelligence and a former federal investigator.
""Vincent, where the hell are you? The precinct has been trying to reach you all night,"" Marcus said, his voice clipped. ""We pulled the records on Dr. Vance and Clara's medical trust. It's worse than you thought.""
Vincent stepped out onto the rusty fire escape of the tenement building, watching the morning fog roll over the industrial skyline. ""Tell me.""
""The hit-and-run three years ago wasn't an accident,"" Marcus explained. ""Clara was already deeply in debt to an underground syndicate run by Richard Sterling. She targeted you at the charity gala. They staged the crash with a stunt driver. Vance was on Sterling's payroll to fabricate spinal trauma.""
""How much did they take?"" Vincent asked, feeling surprisingly detached.
""Over the last thirty-six months? Between the specialized clinical trials, the foundation donations, and the offshore medical bonds you signed over? Nearly twelve million dollars. They drained the final liquid account yesterday morning.""
Vincent gripped the cold iron railing. ""Where are they now?""
""They're liquidating physical assets in the city before taking a private flight out of the country tonight,"" Marcus said. ""Sterling has safe houses near the industrial docks. But Vincent... there's something else. We cross-referenced Sterling's shell companies. He owns the title deed to the Mill District housing blocks. The eviction notices served to those families this week? That's Sterling clearing land for a commercial dump.""
Vincent looked back through the cracked window. Leo was sitting by Maya's bed, carefully peeling an orange Vincent had bought, smiling for the first time.
The betrayal was no longer just personal. It was systemic.

""Marcus,"" Vincent said, his voice turning to steel. ""Freeze every asset tied to my signatures. Notify the port authority. And bring my legal team to 4th Street. We are going to war.""
