Chapter 8: The Confrontation**

""You shouldn't have come here, Vincent,"" Sterling's voice echoed off the corrugated metal walls. He raised the pistol, aiming squarely at the approaching figure. ""I gave you credit for being smart with money, but you're an idiot when it comes to staying alive.""
Vincent stopped twenty paces away, hands resting casually in his coat pockets. He showed no fear, no anger, only an unsettling, clinical stillness.
""Put the gun away, Richard,"" Vincent said evenly. ""The Coast Guard intercepted your freighter ten minutes ago. The perimeter of this pier is locked down by thirty tactical officers.""
Clara gasped, backing behind Sterling. ""He's bluffing! Shoot him, Richard! Let's take the boat at Pier 40!""
""He's not bluffing about the cops, Clara,"" Sterling growled, his knuckles white on the grip. ""Which means he’s my only leverage to get out of here.""
Sterling lunged forward, raising the gun to Vincent's head. But before he could close the distance, high-intensity spotlight beams smashed through the warehouse skylights, blinding them in an arena of white light.
""State Police! Drop your weapon! Hands on your head!"" blared a megaphone from above.
Sterling panicked, his finger tightening on the trigger. In that split second, Vincent didn't cower. Stepping inside the line of fire with the precision of a trained boxer—a hobby he had abandoned years ago to sit by Clara's bedside—Vincent struck Sterling's wrist with brutal force.
The gun clattered across the wet concrete. Sterling swung a desperate, heavy hook, but Vincent slipped the punch, driving a solid blow into Sterling's solar plexus, knocking the air out of him. Sterling crashed to his knees, gasping for breath as laser sights painted his chest.
Clara screamed, turning to run toward the back exit.
She took three frantic steps before tripping over a steel cable, falling hard onto the filthy warehouse floor. Her knees scraped against the concrete, tearing her expensive dress.

She looked up, covered in grease and dust, to see Vincent standing over her.
