Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

""That's a lie!"" Julian shouted, slamming his hands onto the marble table. ""It's an unverified fabrication meant to distract from this impostor you brought into the boardroom!""

Clara stepped forward. Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed an authentic, unbreakable resonance that cut through the panic.

""I grew up in the Appalachian valleys, Mr. Vance,"" Clara said clearly, looking Julian straight in the eyes. ""I know what it looks like when people steal food off a table to line their own pockets. You didn't just betray your family; you betrayed thousands of factory workers whose pensions depend on this company's integrity.""

She opened the folder in front of her, pointing directly at a signature on the paper. ""My mother taught me that character isn't what you show when everyone is watching—it's what you do when you think nobody can stop you. You forged your aunt’s signature to siphon corporate funds into offshore accounts. That signature was signed on the exact day Eleanor was in open-heart surgery three years ago.""

The board members gasped. One elder director stood up, disgust etched across his face. ""Is this true, Julian?""

Before Julian could answer, the frosted glass doors swung open once more. Four federal agents from the SEC and FBI strode into the room, badges gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

""Julian Vance?"" the lead agent announced. ""You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny. Step away from the table and put your hands behind your back.""

Julian stood frozen, his empire crumbling to ash in seconds. As handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he glared at Clara with sheer hatred. ""You ruined us!""

""No,"" Clara said softly, with sorrow rather than spite. ""Your greed ruined you.""
