Chapter 12 - Glass and Steel

The visiting room at the federal detention center smelled of industrial bleach and defeat.
Julian sat behind the thick partition glass, dressed in an orange jumpsuit. The sleek, arrogant executive was gone. His eyes were hollow, his skin pale, his posture slumped under the weight of an impending twenty-year prison sentence.
He picked up the phone. Clara lifted hers to her ear.
""Why did you come?"" Julian asked, his voice rough and stripped of bravado. ""To gloat? To see the dog in his cage?""
""No,"" Clara said steadily. ""I came because you asked to see me. And because hatred is a poison I refuse to drink.""
Julian stared at her through the glass, his hands trembling against the steel ledge. ""I had everything planned. I worked my whole life to be the heir. Then you walked into that ballroom with an apron and a tray, and in five minutes, you tore down everything I built.""
""You built your life on lies and theft, Julian,"" Clara replied softly. ""I didn't tear it down. The foundation was already rotten. You spent your life competing with Damian, trying to prove you were bigger, wealthier, more ruthless. But you never stopped to ask who you were hurting.""
A tear tracked down Julian's hollow cheek. He swallowed hard. ""Victoria’s family fled the country. My friends vanished the moment my assets were frozen. In this entire city... you are the only person who answered my call.""
May you like
""Because you're still family,"" Clara said, her voice filled with quiet grace. ""You will serve your time. But when you walk out of here one day, if your hands are clean and your heart is ready to build something real, you won't be alone.""
Julian’s face crumpled. He pressed his palm against the glass, weeping silent tears of remorse. Clara placed her hand against the other side, offering redemption where he had expected revenge.
