Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Daylight

By morning, the sun washed the Vance estate in pale gold, but the atmosphere inside was electric with tension. News of Victoria Sterling’s public banishment had already exploded across New York society tabloids.

In the sunlit conservatory, Eleanor Vance sat wrapped in a cashmere shawl, sipping chamomile tea. When Clara walked in—dressed not in her maid's uniform, but in a simple slate-blue sweater provided by the staff—the old woman’s teacup rattled against its saucer.

""Clara..."" Eleanor’s voice was barely a breath.

Clara walked forward hesitantly, holding the antique locket in her open palm. ""It was my mother's, ma'am. Sarah.""

Eleanor let out a broken cry that seemed to carry forty years of unshed grief. She reached out with trembling, frail arms. Without thinking, Clara dropped to her knees beside the wheelchair, wrapping her arms around the matriarch. For long minutes, neither spoke. Only quiet, healing tears soaked into cashmere and wool.

""My Sarah lives in you,"" Eleanor wept softly, stroking Clara’s cheek. ""Her eyes. Her stubborn courage. God has shown mercy to an old woman's broken heart.""

Standing by the French doors, Damian observed them, his stern features softened by genuine relief. But the quiet reconciliation was violently interrupted.

The heavy mahogany double doors burst open. Standing on the threshold was Julian Vance—Damian’s slick, ambitious younger cousin and the chief financial officer of Vance Holdings. Behind him stood Victoria Sterling’s father, Richard Sterling, his face purple with outrage.

""What is the meaning of this charade, Damian?"" Julian demanded, his voice slicing through the tender moment. ""You cut off our biggest shipping partner over an unverified scuffle, and now rumors are swirling that you’re housing a common grifter?""
