Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The revelation detonated like a silent bomb inside the oak-paneled library. Clara backed away until her spine hit the heavy oak door.

""No,"" she said, shaking her head vehemently. ""No, this is impossible. My mother worked two shifts at a textile mill until her fingers bled. We ate canned soup by candlelight because the electric company shut off our power! If she was the daughter of this empire, where was this family when she couldn't afford insulin?""

Her bitter words sliced through Damian’s polished armor. He didn’t offer excuses. He stood up, towering and solemn.

""Our grandfather falsified Sarah's death certificate,"" Damian answered, his tone heavy with remorse. ""He burned the paper trail to protect the Vance family's public image. My mother only discovered the truth three years ago when her father confessed on his deathbed. By then, Sarah was already gone. Eleanor has spent every waking minute of the last three years grieving the daughter she never got to save.""

Clara covered her mouth, stifling a ragged sob. She remembered the nights her mother had wept quietly over the silver locket, whispering, “Someone out there gave this to me because they loved me, Clara. Never forget you come from love, not trash.”

""Tomorrow morning, a courier will deliver DNA samples to a private lab,"" Damian said. ""I know this is a shock. But look at me, Clara. You saved my mother tonight. Fate didn't bring you here to serve drinks. It brought you home.""

May you like

""I don't belong in a palace, Mr. Vance,"" Clara whispered through hot tears.

""It’s Damian,"" he replied softly. ""And whether you like it or not, the blood of this house runs in your veins.""
