Chapter 1 - The Weight of Glass

The silence in the grand ballroom of the Vance Estate wasn’t peaceful; it was suffocating.
Damian Vance took one final step off the curved marble staircase, his Italian leather shoes striking the polished floor like a gavel. At thirty-two, Damian was an untouchable titan of venture capital, feared in boardrooms and avoided by fools. His eyes—cold, obsidian, and calculating—drilled straight through Victoria Sterling.
Victoria’s glossy smirk finally fractured. The crystal flute in her manicured hand quivered, splashing vintage champagne over her pristine ivory gown. ""Damian, darling,"" she stammered, painting on an innocent pout. ""You misunderstand. This hired help—she was entirely out of line. She bumped into your dear mother, and I merely stepped in to restore decorum.""
""Restore decorum?"" Clara’s voice broke the hush. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped sparrow, but her spine stayed rigid. She didn’t drop her gaze. ""You shoved Mrs. Vance. You called her a senile burden and dumped your drink at her feet just because she didn't recognize your father's hedge fund.""
Gasps rippled through the gallery of silk-clad guests. To contradict high society was social suicide. To accuse an oil heiress was unthinkable.
Damian didn’t look at Victoria. He turned to the fragile woman in burgundy velvet beside Clara. ""Mother?"" he asked softly, his lethal baritone softening with rare vulnerability.
Eleanor Vance’s silver head trembled, but her wrinkled hand remained resting against Clara’s apron. ""She speaks the truth, son,"" Eleanor whispered. ""If this young woman hadn't caught me, my skull would have cracked against the marble balustrade.""
Damian turned back toward Victoria. The air pressure in the ballroom seemed to plummet. ""Security,"" Damian said without raising his voice.
Two stone-faced guards materialized instantly.
""Escort Miss Sterling to the gates,"" Damian commanded. ""And notify her father that our logistics contracts with his firm are terminated as of tonight.""
""You can't do this over a nameless waitress!"" Victoria shrieked, losing every shred of composure as guards clamped onto her bare arms. ""She’s a nobody, Damian! A nobody!""

As Victoria was dragged away, Damian's gaze shifted to Clara. His dark eyes flicked over her frayed white collar, her worn black lace-ups, and finally stopped at the old silver locket peeking from beneath her bodice.
His pupils dilated in profound shock. ""Where did you get that pendant?""
