Chapter 9 - The Clearing Smoke

Within three minutes, the room was secured. Reed and his operatives were disarmed, zip-tied, and marched down the grand staircase in full view of the assembled high-society guests who had just been released from the east ballroom. Whispers and the flash of smartphone cameras filled the grand foyer, but Julian didn't stay to watch the spectacle.

He descended the narrow service stairs into the sub-cellar, following the damp stone passageway until he emerged into the cool evening air near the gardener’s cottage.

Rain was beginning to fall, a soft misty drizzle that washed the scent of gunpowder and burning circuits from the estate. Standing under the overhang of the cottage porch was Elena, shivering in her thin uniform, clutching the baby securely inside an oilskin work jacket. Sofia sat on an upturned wooden crate nearby, staring blankly at the wet grass.

When Elena saw Julian emerge unharmed, the rigid suspicion on her face finally dissolved, giving way to profound, bone-deep exhaustion.

"It's over," Julian said gently, walking up the steps. "Reed is in federal custody. The archives have been released. The board won't survive the night."

Sofia looked up, her eyes red and hollow. "What happens to me?"

Julian looked down at her. He felt neither hatred nor pity, only the cold sorrow of recognizing someone who had sold everything worth keeping for safety that never existed.

"You speak to the federal prosecutors, Sofia. You tell them every transaction, every name, every meeting Christopher was pressured into. If you tell the truth, you might stay out of prison. But you will never see a single cent of Christopher’s estate, and you will never come near this boy again."

Sofia didn't argue. She simply lowered her head and let out a broken sob, pulling her silk robe tighter against the damp autumn chill.
