Chapter 1 - The Iron Gate

The heavy oak doors of Vance Manor clicked shut, followed instantly by the hollow hum of pneumatic security bolts engaging throughout the west wing. In the dim expanse of the upper corridor, Julian Vance kept his phone pressed to his ear until the screen went dark. Beside him, Elena stood motionless, the infant cradled against her chest like an alibi wrapped in pale yellow fleece.
Downstairs, the chamber orchestra’s distant strings vibrated through the floorboards—Vivaldi’s Spring, played for three hundred high-society guests sipping vintage champagne, entirely unaware they were now prisoners inside a gilded fortress.
Julian lowered his arm, his dark eyes fixing on Elena. "Who put you up to this?"
Elena didn’t flinch. Her hands, pale against the dark wool of her maid’s uniform, remained steady around the bundled child. "Your brother didn't die of a sudden arrhythmia, Julian. He was suffocated three days after drafting a codicil giving Sofia nothing and this baby everything. Sofia knows it. And whoever funded her knew you’d fall in line to protect the family name."
Inside the bridal suite, the murmur of Sofia’s phone conversation abruptly halted. Footsteps tapped softly against the plush carpeting, drawing nearer to the threshold. Julian’s pulse thudded behind his temples, not with fear, but with the cold clarity of a man who realized every bond in his life had been negotiated on a ledger.
"Give me the child," Julian said quietly.
"Not until we are past the front gate," Elena whispered back, her voice brittle. "I spent six months keeping this baby alive in safehouses while your board directors carved up your brother's estate. You want justice? You have to earn it."
The door swung wider. Sofia stood framed in the gilded doorframe, silk robe tied tight, phone clutched in white-knuckled fingers. Her eyes darted from Julian’s tuxedo to Elena’s uniform, the blood draining instantly from her powdered cheeks.

"Julian," Sofia breathed, taking an instinctive step backward. "What is she doing here?"
"David just locked the perimeter," Julian replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The registrar isn't coming up. And nobody is leaving."
