Chapter 6 - The Broken Covenant

"Julian, don't do this," Sofia whispered, backing into the wardrobe alcove alongside Elena. "They will kill you. Marcus Reed is running this operation. He doesn't leave witnesses."

Marcus Reed. The senior board chairman. The man who had given the eulogy at Christopher’s funeral and placed a fatherly hand on Julian’s shoulder, advising him to take over the mantle.

"Sofia, go with Elena," Julian commanded coldly. "If you ever had a shred of real feeling for my brother, make sure his son gets out of this house alive. That is your only shot at redemption."

Sofia stared at him, then looked toward the child in the bassinet. Something ancient and human seemed to pierce through her vanity. She nodded slowly, tears spilling freely, and hurried toward the bathroom with Elena following close behind.

The bedroom door handle jiggled. Julian drew a slow, deliberate breath, reached into his jacket pocket, and clicked his phone on, setting it to auto-record while broadcasting its signal directly to the remote off-site cloud server he maintained for SEC compliance.

The electronic lock gave way with a sharp snap.

The door swung inward, and three men in nondescript dark tactical gear entered, their sidearms lowered at low-ready. Behind them stepped Marcus Reed, wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat, completely calm, as though he were entering an ordinary boardroom meeting instead of an armed breach.

"Julian," Reed said pleasantly, stepping into the room and glancing around the opulent decor. "You're late for your own reception. The guests are getting restless."

"The doors are locked, Marcus," Julian said, standing motionless in the center of the room. "And you brought guns to a wedding."
