Chapter 10 - Blood and Ink

Forty-eight hours later, the international financial markets reacted with predictable violence. Vance Global Holding suffered the largest single-day market cap collapse in its fifty-year history as federal indictments rolled out against seven senior board executives. Television news trucks lined the perimeter gates of Vance Manor, their satellite dishes aimed at the stone lions while anchors reported on murder-for-hire conspiracies, money laundering, and offshore shadow funds.

Inside the study, Julian sat behind his grandfather’s heavy mahogany desk, signing legal documents under the warm light of a green banker's lamp. Across from him sat his personal attorney, Arthur Vance—his grandfather’s younger brother, an eighty-year-old retired judge whose hands were spotted with age but whose gaze remained razor sharp.

"You're formally liquidating seventy percent of the holdings," Arthur noted, adjusting his reading glasses as he flipped through the stacks of bond covenants. "You're surrendering the executive board seats and transferring the patent rights to an independent scientific foundation."

"Christopher wanted those clean energy patents open to the public," Julian said, signing another page with an ink pen. "Keeping them locked behind shareholder walls cost him his life. I won't profit off the blood on that pavement."

"And the rest?" Arthur asked.

Julian turned to look at the leather armchair by the fireplace. Elena sat there, quietly rocking a sleeping baby Leo in her arms. She wore a simple wool sweater and jeans, looking completely different from the desperate fugitive who had cornered him in the bridal hallway.

"The remainder of the estate goes into an irrevocable blind trust for Leo," Julian said. "He inherits on his twenty-fifth birthday, under one condition."

"Which is?" Arthur asked.

"He never has to run a company to keep his name."
