Chapter 11 - The Confession of Sofia

Before the federal grand jury convened in the district court, Julian visited Sofia one final time at her family's brownstone in upstate New York. The luxury cars in the driveway were gone, repossessed by the banks, and the grand front lawn was strewn with dead leaves that nobody had raked.

Sofia answered the door herself. Gone was the immaculate hair and the diamond jewelry; she wore an oversized knit sweater and pale slippers.

"Julian," she said, surprised, stepping aside to let him into the echoing foyer. "My lawyers said you wouldn't speak to me."

"I'm not here as an adversary, Sofia," Julian said, leaving his coat on. "I brought you this."

He handed her an envelope containing a single photograph: Christopher, laughing on a boat in Maine during the summer before everything fell apart. He looked young, sunburnt, and genuinely happy.

Sofia’s fingers trembled as she held the edge of the print. A quiet, genuine tear slid down her cheek. "I really did love him at the beginning," she whispered. "Before the money became so loud. When Marcus told me Christopher was becoming unstable, I believed him because it was easier than fighting them. I convinced myself I was saving the family."

"Fear makes people rationalize monsters," Julian replied gently. "Tomorrow, you tell the grand jury about Marcus Reed. Not to save your reputation—that’s gone. Do it so Christopher’s son grows up knowing his father didn't die for a lie."

Sofia clutched the photograph to her chest and nodded. "I will. I swear to you, Julian. I will."

Julian turned and walked out the door, feeling the final lingering ghost of the wedding vanish behind him.
