Chapter 15 - The Unwritten Will

That night, after Leo had fallen asleep in his crib beneath a warm quilt, Julian sat by the stone fireplace in the farmhouse living room. Outside, the Atlantic wind howled softly through the eaves, driving waves against the rocky shore.

On the table rested the old faded photograph of Christopher and Julian as young boys, standing beside their grandfather’s first wooden boat in Detroit. Next to it lay Christopher’s original thumb drive—the device that had sparked the standoff in the hallway six hundred miles and an entire lifetime away.

Julian picked up the thumb drive, feeling its weight between his fingers. It held the records of an empire built on greed, ambition, and tragic mistakes. But it had also served its ultimate purpose: it had protected the truth until the truth was strong enough to stand on its own.

Without hesitation, Julian leaned forward and dropped the small piece of plastic into the heart of the roaring fire.

The casing curled in the flames, the internal circuitry flaring with a brief, brilliant blue spark before being consumed by the glowing embers. The last tether to the old Vance dynasty turned to ash, drifting harmlessly up the chimney and into the wide, starlit northern sky.

Julian leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath of clean, wood-smoke air. The wedding had ended before it began, but for the first time in his life, he was home.
