Chapter 9 - The Plan Takes Shape

By evening, the bedroom had transformed into an operational center. The hair clippers and towels had been put away; in their place on Eleanor’s bed lay three decades of archived balance sheets, legal memorandums, and Arthur Hayes’s personal diaries.
Eleanor was resting against a mountain of pillows, her color slowly returning. Julian had loosened his tie, his shirt sleeves rolled up to expose the ink winding down his forearms as he cross-referenced dates in Arthur’s notebook with official company filings on his laptop.
""Look here,"" Julian pointed at a ledger entry from October 2024. ""Henderson filed an amended tax disclosure claiming the Dayton facility had suffered fifty million in uninsurable environmental damages. But Arthur’s notes prove the insurance company paid out forty-two million directly to a subsidiary registered in Delaware.""
Clara leaned over his shoulder, her dark hair brushing his collar. ""That subsidiary... Crestview Logistics?""
""Yes,"" Julian said, glancing up at her. ""How do you know that name?""
""My father had a folder labeled Crestview hidden inside our old piano,"" Clara explained, her eyes wide. ""He told me that if anything ever happened to him, and the mortgage went unpaid, I was to take that folder directly to the state attorney general. But when he died... the bank foreclosed the following week, and the bailiffs locked the house before I could retrieve it.""
Julian snapped his laptop shut. ""The bank didn't lock that house on normal foreclosure protocol. Henderson’s firm holds thirty percent of that regional bank's commercial paper.""
""They were looking for the file,"" Eleanor whispered from the bed, her eyes bright with sudden clarity. ""Arthur hid the smoking gun in the one place they couldn't search without a warrant.""
Julian checked his watch. ""The house in Dayton. Has it been auctioned yet?""
May you like
""The auction is set for Friday morning,"" Clara said, her pulse quickening. ""At the county courthouse.""
""Then we have twenty-four hours to break into your childhood home,"" Julian said plainly.
