THE MAID’S LAST CONFESSION / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Razor’s Edge

Julian stood frozen under the high, gilded doorframe of the master bedroom, his broad shoulders squared like an iron fortress. He looked at Clara kneeling on the parquet floor, clutching the electric clippers in trembling, pale hands. Across from her sat Eleanor, his mother—the matriarch whose proud empire had bought this limestone estate—shorn of her once-magnificent silver curls.

""Why are you touching her?"" Julian’s voice sliced through the hum of the air purifier, tight and gravelly.

Clara flinched, pulling the corded clippers close to her black maid apron. Her eyelashes glistened with unshed tears, her cheeks flushed scarlet under the weight of his suspicion. ""Mr. Vance... please. Mrs. Vance asked me to help.""

""She asked you?"" Julian took two heavy strides forward, polished dress shoes clicking sharply. ""You were hired three weeks ago through an agency to clean the east wing. You’re not a registered nurse. You’re domestic staff.""

Eleanor raised a frail, paper-thin hand, liver spots showing beneath delicate lace cuffs. ""Julian, quiet down. You sound like a prosecutor in your own home.""

""I sound like a son who walked in to find a stranger shaving his dying mother’s head behind closed doors,"" Julian countered, his jaw tight. He looked down at the white linen towel on Eleanor’s lap, sprinkled with soft tufts of fallen hair.

""It’s just hair, darling,"" Eleanor murmured with a weary, dry smile. ""The chemo took half of it last night. Clara saved me the indignity of watching it fall out in clumps over breakfast.""

Julian stared at Clara, whose dark eyes stayed lowered toward the Persian rug. There was no defense in her posture, only an eerie, suffocating grief that seemed far too deep for an hourly employee.

""Leave the room, Clara,"" Julian commanded.

""No,"" Eleanor interrupted, her weak grip surprisingly firm as she held Clara’s wrist. ""Stay right where you are, my dear. Julian... there’s something you need to hear, and you’re going to sit down before I say another word.""
