Chapter 4 - Hidden Books

Julian walked over to the mahogany vanity, resting his hands on the polished wood to steady himself. His reflection showed a man drained of certainty. For six years, he had operated under the premise that absolute corporate pragmatism was the only shield against ruin.

""Why didn't you fire her when you found out who she was?"" Julian asked Eleanor without turning around.

""Because the moment she revived me,"" Eleanor answered, ""she pulled Arthur’s papers from her pocket. She threw them onto my bed and said, 'My father died broke so you could sleep on Egyptian cotton.' She stood right where you are standing, Julian, waiting for me to scream for security.""

""And you didn't?""

""I read every page,"" Eleanor replied softly. ""I read Arthur's handwritten journals. I saw the receipts he paid out of pocket for the factory union benefits. I saw the legal notices your father’s attorneys drafted behind my back while I was undergoing my first surgery in Zurich.""

Julian turned, his expression pained. ""Dad handled the corporate legalities. I oversaw distribution and fleet operations. I assumed the restructuring was mutually agreed upon.""

""Assumption is the luxury of the powerful, Mr. Vance,"" Clara said, standing up slowly and smoothing down her wrinkled apron. She didn't shrink from him now. ""Your father promised my dad that the shares would be returned once the debt was cleared. Instead, you dissolved the shell corporation and wiped his thirty years of service off the registry.""

Eleanor gestured toward the safe built behind the oil portrait of Julian’s grandfather. ""The original partnership agreement isn't gone, Julian. Richard kept it. He kept it in the wall safe because guilt makes even ruthless men hoard their sins.""

""Mother, stop,"" Julian said quietly.

""Open it,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice suddenly crisp with an authority that cancer hadn't completely eroded. ""The code is your seventh birthday. Open it and look at what our surname actually bought.""
