Chapter 12 - Ambush at Maple Street

Julian stepped instantly in front of Clara, shielding her behind his broad frame as he directed the flashlight toward the entrance.

Standing in the doorway, rain dripping from his tailored wool overcoat, was Marcus Henderson, flanked by two private security guards in dark jackets.

""Put the light down, Julian,"" Henderson said smoothly, stepping into the living room. ""You have no business trespassing on bank property. And you certainly have no business consorting with fraudulent former staff.""

""You robbed Arthur Hayes,"" Julian said, his voice deadly calm. ""You stole thirty-six million dollars from our workers, let an innocent man die in disgrace, and tried to bleed my mother dry while she fought cancer.""

Henderson chuckled, a hollow, grating sound. ""Your father knew every detail, Julian. Richard sat in the boardroom and signed the approval. He was just too much of a coward to put his name on the Delaware filing. I did the dirty work that kept your family in private jets.""

""And Arthur kept the receipts,"" Clara called out from behind Julian, her voice ringing with absolute defiance.

Henderson’s eyes locked onto Clara, his smile vanishing into a thin, predatory line. ""Miss Hayes. You inherited your father’s unfortunate habit of interfering with men who build the world. Do you really think a county judge will accept documents handed over by a thief who entered the Vance estate under a false identity?""

He gestured to the two guards behind him. ""Take the envelope. If Mr. Vance resists, call the local sheriff and report a breaking-and-entering in progress. Let's see how the board reacts when their CEO spends Thursday morning in a county jail.""
