Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Hallway

Julian did not sit. He crossed his heavily tattooed arms, towering over both women as the midday light filtered through sheer drapes, highlighting dust motes dancing in the quiet tension.

""Speak, Mother,"" he said quietly.

Eleanor swallowed, her throat visibly dry. She motioned to the bedside table where a leather-bound journal rested beneath a porcelain cup of lukewarm chamomile tea. ""Three years ago, when your father passed, the board tried to seize the manufacturing plants in Ohio. Do you remember who stepped between the creditors and the payroll accounts?""

Julian frowned. ""Arthur Hayes. Dad’s chief financial officer.""

""Arthur Hayes took the bullet for our family’s reckless expansion,"" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking slightly. ""He spent his entire retirement savings posting bond to keep the factory doors open while you were overseas managing the European logistics. He worked eighty hours a week under stress that would break any mortal man.""

""I know Arthur's record,"" Julian said, his brow furrowing deeper. ""He passed away eighteen months ago. Massive coronary event. We sent flowers and paid out his pension.""

Eleanor turned her pale face toward the kneeling maid. Clara’s shoulders shook in silence, her forehead pressed against Eleanor’s silk-draped knees.

""You paid out fifty cents on the dollar, Julian,"" Eleanor said, a trace of bitter iron entering her tone. ""Because your corporate lawyers buried his pension clause in an offshore restructuring loophole. Arthur died disgraced, broke, and unable to pay for the insulin his daughter needed to stay out of diabetic comas.""

Julian blinked, the air suddenly thick in his lungs. His gaze snapped down to the young woman in the black-and-white uniform. ""Clara...""

""Clara Hayes,"" Clara whispered, raising her chin at last. Tear tracks cut clean paths through her pale skin, yet her hazel eyes burnt with quiet dignity. ""I didn't come here to steal your silver, Mr. Vance. I came to see the monsters who traded my father’s life for another summer estate.""
