Chapter 7 - The Unseen Fractures
Julian did not hand over the file. He walked back to the tall windows overlooking the manicured rose gardens of the estate. Rain clouds were gathering over the horizon, casting the lush green lawns into a somber shade of bruised purple.
""You don't understand what the board is preparing to do, Mother,"" Julian said, his back turned to them. ""They suspect you are terminal. Henderson and the senior partners have already scheduled an emergency governance meeting for Thursday. If they catch wind of an eight-million-dollar unilateral restitution, they will trigger the competency clause.""
Eleanor scoffed faintly. ""They think I’m losing my mind because I feel remorse?""
""They will claim you lack testamentary capacity,"" Julian said sharply, turning around. ""They will argue that Clara manipulated you while in a medically vulnerable state. Under Section 4 of the trust charter, if two physicians and the executive committee declare you incapacitated, my power of attorney is superseded by the board trustees.""
Clara took a step backward toward the corridor door. ""Then I should leave. I don't want to cause this. If they investigate my employment application, they’ll find I used a friend's agency profile to get past background screening. They’ll arrest me for fraud.""
""You aren't going anywhere,"" Julian said, his tone shifting from suspicion to an intense, cold calculation.
""You can't keep me here,"" Clara retorted, her jaw set.

""If you walk out that gate right now,"" Julian said, stepping toward her, ""Henderson’s private investigators will pick you up within two hours. Do you think you're the only one watching this house? There are two unmarked sedans parked at the end of our lane every single day. They are waiting for Mother to slip so they can seize control of the trust.""
Eleanor closed her eyes, a look of profound fatigue washing over her features. ""Julian is right, Clara. We have walked into a den of wolves, and the gate is already closed behind us.""
