Chapter 7: Payroll and Shadows

The study in the brownstone smelled of aged leather, ink, and the faint, bitter trace of black coffee. Dawn was breaking through the tall, arched windows, washing the mahogany desk in a pale, sterile grey light. Spread out across the surface were three massive ledger printouts I had smuggled out from the hotel's administrative annex weeks ago, alongside the Vanguard Hospitality shell company document we had retrieved from the municipal archives.

I traced a line of numbers with my index finger, my bandaged thumb tapping softly against the paper. "Here," I murmured, leaning closer to the desk. "Look at the contractor payouts for the past four quarters. They line up dollar-for-dollar with the interest rates the collection crew quoted Leo."

Dante stepped up behind me, resting a hand on the back of my leather chair. His presence was a solid, grounding weight. He leaned down, his dark hair brushing against my shoulder as he studied the columns. "Gable isn't just running a side hustle," Dante said, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that signaled absolute focus. "He's using hotel operating capital to fund the extortion network, then writing off the defaults as business losses through Vanguard."

"And because he controls the internal audit logs, no one upstairs questions the variance," I added, looking up at him. Our faces were only inches apart. I could see the fine flecks of amber in his dark eyes, the steady, unblinking intensity that made it difficult to draw a normal breath. "He’s been using the hotel as a laundering machine for predatory loans targeting our own staff."

"Which means we have the proof we need to dismantle his entire operation," Dante said, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. "But handing it to corporate compliance won't work. Gable has board members in his pocket. We have to hit him where he's exposed—publicly, and without warning."

"There's a charity gala tonight in the grand ballroom," I said, a sudden resolve hardening my voice. "Gable is hosting it. He'll have the physical master ledgers in his private office safe because the digital servers are locked down for maintenance today."

Dante straightened up, a slow, approving smirk touching the corner of his mouth. "An undercover return to the scene of the crime. Classic." He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a smudge of printer toner from my cheek. "If we do this, Sela, there's no turning back. We walk through those front doors, and we finish it."

"I'm ready," I said, meeting his gaze without a flinch. "Let's finish it."
