Chapter 12: Turning Over the Uniform

Morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of the executive suite, casting long, golden patterns across the polished herringbone floors. I stood before the full-length mirror in the adjoining dressing area, staring at my reflection. The bruised knuckles on my hands were fading into a dull purple-yellow, and the dark circles under my eyes were finally receding. Carefully, I unbuttoned the black-and-white maid's uniform, slipping the stiff white apron from my waist and folding the fabric into a neat, compact square on the marble vanity.
It was the uniform I had worn through fifteen-hour shifts, scrubbing marble floors and swallowing insults from arrogant guests just to keep our heads above water. Folding it away felt less like quitting a job and more like shedding an old skin that no longer fit.
There was a firm tap at the door, and Dante stepped inside, holding a crisp manila envelope. He took in the folded uniform on the counter, his expression shifting into something soft and unreadable. He didn't say a word about the clothes; he simply laid the envelope down beside them.
"The authorities executed the warrant on Gable’s office an hour ago," Dante said, breaking the silence. "The federal marshals found the backup drives containing every ledger, every forced contract, and every extorted name. Vanguard Hospitality is facing liquidation under federal receivership. Gable won't see daylight for twenty years."
I let out a slow, steady breath, the final phantom weight lifting from my shoulders. "And the staff who were complicit?"
"Fired and blacklisted from the industry," Dante answered flatly, walking closer until he stood just a step away. "The hotel is transitioning under my direct management group starting today. We're rebuilding the entire operational structure from the ground up, starting with fair wages and actual security for the staff."
"You didn't have to do all of this, Dante," I said softly, looking up into his dark, sharp eyes. "You could have just handed the phone back to me in the hallway and walked away."
"I don't walk away when someone brings violence into my properties," he replied, his voice dropping an octave, carrying that familiar, resonant gravity. "And I certainly don't walk away when I see someone fighting tooth and nail to protect the people they love." He reached out, his warm fingers brushing lightly against my uninjured wrist. "What do you want to do now, Sela? The city is yours."
"I want to make sure Leo gets settled into his new position," I said, a genuine smile finally touching my lips. "And after that... I think I want to learn how to build something of my own. Not just survive."
"Good," Dante murmured, his thumb tracing a slow circle against my pulse point. "Because I happen to need someone sharp, fearless, and entirely incorruptible to manage my private correspondence and foundation assets. That is, if you're willing to step into a different kind of office."

"Is that a job offer?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"It's an invitation," he said, his lips curving into a rare, genuine smile. "Let's go downstairs. The transition team is waiting."
