Chapter 13: Dusk on the Penthouse Terrace

The sun dipped below the city skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of violet, amber, and deep gray. High above the bustling avenue, the private penthouse terrace offered a breathless, panoramic view of the metropolis glittering to life against the gathering dark. I stood by the glass railing, holding a glass of sparkling water, letting the cool evening breeze catch my loose brown hair, which was no longer tied back in a tight, defensive knot.

Behind me, the heavy glass door slid open, and heavy footsteps signaled Dante's approach. He stepped out onto the terrace, having shed his suit jacket; his black silk shirt was open at the top button, catching the amber glow of the terrace lights against his neck tattoos. He handed me a small, sealed courier envelope before leaning against the railing beside me.

"Leo finished his first day of onboarding with the logistics team," Dante said, watching the distant flow of traffic miles below. "He's sharp. He caught an inventory discrepancy in the supply chain within his first two hours. Reminds me of someone I know."

I laughed softly, turning the envelope over in my hands. "He was nervous all morning. Kept asking if he was dressed right. Thank you, Dante. For giving him a chance to breathe."

"He earned it," Dante said simply. He turned his head, his dark eyes fixing on me with an intensity that made the surrounding cool air feel entirely irrelevant. "The restructuring of the hotel is nearly complete. My executive assistant position officially opens next week. Are you ready for it?"

"I am," I said, meeting his gaze without flinching. "Though I have to admit, moving from a maid's cart to a penthouse office feels a little surreal."

"You survived an underground extortion ring with your dignity intact and your brother safe," Dante said, his voice lowering, carrying a quiet, fierce respect. "An office desk will be effortless for you."

A comfortable silence settled between us, broken only by the distant hum of the city. But beneath the calm, an electric current lingered, heavy with everything we had unspoken since that frantic night in the marble hallway. Dante shifted closer, his shoulder brushing mine, the warmth of his skin radiating through the cool night air.

"Sela," he began, his voice hesitating for the first time since I had met him. He paused, looking out toward the horizon before turning back to look directly into my eyes. "When I took that phone from your hand... I didn't just intend to stop a threat. From the moment I saw you standing against that wall, bruised and crying, my world narrowed down to making sure no one would ever touch you again."

My breath hitched slightly. The cinematic, dangerous man who could bury an entire crew with a single sentence was looking at me with absolute vulnerability.

"Dante..." I started, my voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't usually let people in," he continued, his hand reaching out to gently cup my cheek, his thumb brushing across my skin with infinite care. "My life is calculated, controlled, and heavily guarded. But you walked straight through my doors and completely disrupted every rule I set for myself. I want you to stay, Sela. Not just as an assistant. Stay here. With me."
