Chapter 14: Confronting the Echoes

The morning air was crisp as I stepped out of the grand hotel entrance, heading toward the local artisanal coffee shop down the block to pick up files for the morning executive briefing. The city was waking up with its usual frantic energy, yellow cabs streaming down the asphalt and pedestrians rushing past in tailored coats. For the first time in months, my steps felt light, unburdened by the constant paranoia that someone was waiting around the corner to collect a nonexistent debt.

Then I heard the heavy, uneven footsteps approaching from the side alleyway.

"Hey. Sela, right?"

I froze, my blood running instantly cold. A man stepped out from the shadow of a brick facade—scruffy, wearing a stained canvas jacket, his eyes darting nervously up and down the sidewalk. It was a low-level associate from Marcus's crew, someone who had slipped through the initial sweep by federal agents. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets, though I could see the sharp outline of a heavy metal pipe pressing against the fabric.

"Marcus is gone, and your little corporate boyfriend cleaned out our whole operation," the man hissed, stepping directly into my path and blocking the sidewalk. "You think you walk away clean just because the federal boys stepped in? You owe us for the inventory we lost when your thug friends raided the dock."

My heart hammered against my ribs, the instinct to panic flaring hot and fast. For a terrifying second, I was back in that hallway, clutching a broken phone while a stranger threatened my brother. But the fear vanished just as quickly, replaced by a sudden, cold anger. I didn't flinch. I stood my ground, my chin lifting as I stared him down.

"If you take one more step toward me," a voice cut through the morning air like a razor, "you won't live long enough to regret it."

The associate spun around in sheer panic. Dante stepped out from the revolving doors of the hotel lobby, moving with terrifying speed and lethal grace. He hadn't even bothered to put on his suit jacket; his sleeves were still rolled up, and his dark eyes were fixed on the street thug with absolute, freezing fury.

Before the man could even pull his hand from his pocket, Dante closed the distance between them, stepping inside his guard with practiced brutality. A single, lightning-fast strike to the solar plexus doubled the associate over, and a follow-up blow to the jaw sent him crashing hard onto the concrete sidewalk, his breath leaving him in a ragged gasp.

Dante pinned him to the pavement with the toe of his shoe, leaning down slightly, his voice dropping into that terrifying, authoritative register that had silenced an entire crew over a phone line. "Touch her, or come within five hundred yards of this property again, and I won't just bury your crew. I'll erase you from the map."

The terrified man scrambled backward on the pavement as soon as Dante lifted his foot, hauling himself up and sprinting away down the alley without looking back.

Dante watched him disappear before turning slowly to face me. His jaw was clenched, his chest rising and falling with restrained adrenaline. He crossed the sidewalk in two strides, his hands coming up to grip my shoulders, checking me over with frantic intensity.

"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice rough. "Did he touch you?"

"I'm fine," I breathed, my hands coming up to rest against his chest, feeling the solid, rapid beat of his heart beneath the silk shirt. A profound wave of certainty washed over me. I looked up into his fierce, protective eyes and made my choice. "I'm not going anywhere, Dante. I'm staying right here."
