Chapter 10: The Loading Dock Trap

The hotel’s underground loading dock was cold, echoing with the distant drip of overhead pipes and the hum of massive HVAC exhaust fans. The harsh fluorescent lights cast a sickly greenish tint over the concrete pillars where delivery trucks usually unloaded their cargo. Standing near the freight elevator was a towering figure in a heavy leather jacket—Marcus, the local crew leader who had been terrorizing Leo for weeks, clutching a manila envelope he expected to be filled with payoff cash.

He didn't know Gable had already confessed upstairs. He didn't know the federal marshals were already reviewing the digital backups of the ledgers. And he certainly didn't know he was walking straight into a trap carefully engineered by Dante Vance.

As Marcus paced back and forth, checking his watch with a growing sense of impatient irritation, heavy footfalls echoed down the ramp behind him. He spun around, a sneering insult ready on his lips, but the words died instantly in his throat.

Three of Dante’s private security specialists blocked the exit ramp, dressed in tactical black, moving with absolute, military-grade coordination. Before Marcus could reach for the heavy lead pipe tucked into his belt, Dante stepped out from the shadows of a parked delivery van.

"Looking for someone?" Dante asked, his voice cutting cleanly through the damp air of the garage.

Marcus snarled, lunging forward with a desperate punch aimed straight at Dante's jaw. It was a sloppy, unrefined swing born of panic. Dante ducked beneath the blow with casual ease, stepping inside Marcus's guard and delivering a devastating left hook to the ribs, followed immediately by a sharp palm strike to the chest that sent the crew leader crashing backward over a wooden pallet.

Before Marcus could recover his breath, Dante’s men descended upon him like shadows, zip-tying his wrists behind his back with practiced efficiency and pinning him facedown against the cold concrete.

From the doorway of the freight elevator, I watched the entire sequence unfold. Standing beside me was Leo, his small frame trembling slightly as he clutched my hand, his eyes wide with disbelief. A security officer had brought him up from the safe room just minutes ago, looking pale and exhausted, but entirely unharmed.

"Is it... is it really over, Sela?" Leo whispered, his voice cracking as he stared down at the subdued extortionist.

May you like

I knelt down, wrapping my arms around my younger brother and burying my face in his jacket, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding a skin I had worn for years. "It's over, Leo," I murmured against his shoulder, tears of pure relief finally spilling over my lashes. "You're safe."

Across the loading dock, Dante looked up from the pinned crew leader, his dark gaze finding mine through the dim light. He gave a single, imperceptible nod, signaling that the war was won. For the first time in as long as I could remember, the heavy knot of fear in my chest completely dissolved, leaving behind a profound, unshakable peace.
