Chapter 8 - The Cracks in the ArmorBack in the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse, the adrenaline faded, leaving behind an unexpected warmth. Julian poured two glasses of sparkling water, handing one to Clara as they stood near the window overlooking the city lights.

"You surprised me tonight," Julian admitted softly. "I expected you to hold the line, but you outmaneuvered Arthur at his own game."
"I spent my childhood watching landlords find loopholes to evict honest families, Julian," Clara smiled wryly, slipping off her heels. "Bullies always rely on paperwork they assume the poor don't know how to read."
Julian laughed—a deep, genuine sound Clara had never heard before. It transformed his face, stripping away the harsh lines of power to reveal the youth he had lost too soon.
"My father never laughed," Julian mused, his gaze drifting toward the harbor. "He thought joy was a sign of weakness in business. Everything had to be calculated. Until you walked into that ballroom clutching that ridiculous plush toy, I thought life was just an endless sequence of hostile takeovers."

Clara took a tentative step closer to him, sensing the fragile barrier between them melting. "And now?"
Julian looked at her, his hand slowly reaching out to tuck a loose strand of auburn hair behind her ear. His fingers were warm against her skin, lingering for a heartbeat longer than necessary. "Now, Clara, I find myself dreading the end of our six months."
