Chapter 3 - The Boardroom CrucibleThe Vance International headquarters towered seventy stories above Midtown, a monolith of black glass and chrome. The ink was barely dry on their civil marriage registry when Julian escorted Clara into the main boardroom. Ten senior directors sat around a slab of imported slate, their faces ranging from skepticism to open hostility.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, a silver-haired patriarch with predatory eyes. Arthur looked Clara up and down, his gaze lingering on her simple, elegant wool coat rather than high couture.
"A hasty ceremony in a courthouse, Julian?" Arthur sneered, tossing a legal file onto the desk. "A designer from the East Side with no lineage and no capital. You insult your father’s memory by parading a charity worker as an executive spouse."
Clara felt a knot tighten in her throat, but Julian remained motionless, hands in his pockets. He didn't defend her; he gave her the floor. Clara took a slow, measured breath.

"Lineage doesn't fix supply chains, Mr. Vance," Clara spoke clearly, stepping toward the table. "And capital without purpose is just dead weight. Last year, your company cut funding to regional pediatric programs to post a two-percent quarterly gain. If protecting that greed is your idea of executive leadership, then this board is bankrupt in every way that truly matters."
A stunned silence fell over the room. Julian’s mouth curved into a faint, barely perceptible smile. "My wife’s signatures are verified, Uncle. The controlling shares are locked. You are dismissed."
