BEYOND THE SHADOWS OF GOLD / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Hollow WaltzThe chandeliers cast sharp reflections across the polished mahogany floor. Every step Clara took felt heavy, muffled by the rising hum of the orchestra. Julian Vance held her right hand with unyielding authority, his left settled against the small of her back. His tuxedo smelled faintly of cedarwood and crisp night air, a sharp contrast to the suffocating aroma of champagne and lilies.

Across the hall stood Ethan. Only three months ago, Ethan had promised to stand beside her forever, yet here he was, an expensive glass tilting in his numb grip, staring at her as if she were a ghost. Beside him, Victoria draped an arm over her swollen belly, her diamond necklace flashing under the lights. Clara had spent two years building a quiet life with Ethan, only to discover his debt, his secret engagement, and the lies he whispered to keep her tucked away like a shameful mistake.

"Look at me, Clara," Julian’s voice murmured, low and steady. "He chose his price tag. Stop measuring your worth by what he threw away."

Clara lifted her chin. Julian was an enigma in high-society Manhattan—a financier feared for his ruthless takeovers, known to speak only in terms of leverage and outcomes. Yet his eyes, dark and focused, held none of the cruelty the press loved to dissect.

"Why me, Mr. Vance?" Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly above the violin crescendo. "You could have hired anyone to stage a distraction tonight."

"A hired actor performs," Julian replied quietly. "You are surviving. The board needs to see I value loyalty over convenience, and you need to remember that dignity cannot be auctioned off. Hold on to me. The wolves haven't even begun to circle."
