Chapter 4 - The Price of IndependenceLiving in Julian’s penthouse was like occupying a modern museum. Everything was immaculate, muted, and silent. Yet, contrary to her fears, Julian never imposed himself. He gave Clara the entire east wing, converting a sunlit sitting room into an atelier filled with sketchpads, fabric rolls, and sewing tables.

For the first few weeks, they existed like parallel ships. They shared breakfast at dawn—Julian reading financial journals, Clara drafting ergonomic fasteners for disabled youth. Occasionally, their eyes met over black coffee, sharing quiet nods of mutual survival.
One rainy Tuesday evening, Clara worked late, her fingers sore from pinning thick denim. She didn't hear Julian enter until a cup of chamomile tea appeared near her elbow.
"You push yourself harder than my analysts," Julian remarked, loosening his tie. He sat on an adjacent stool, his massive frame folding gracefully into the creative space.
"Work gives me control," she admitted, tracing the seam of a child's jacket. "When Ethan took credit for my first commercial line, he told me ideas are worthless without money behind them. I started believing him."

"Ethan is a parasite who mistakes access for talent," Julian said softly. He reached out, his thumb gently smoothing over a frayed edge of cloth. "What you create here changes real lives. Wealth without purpose is a prison, Clara. I’ve lived in it my whole life."
For the first time, Clara saw the exhaustion behind his sharp gaze. Underneath the billionaire armor lay a man suffocated by expectations, battling alone against a family that viewed him only as an asset.
