Before Clara could retreat, Julian led her toward a secluded terrace where the cool night wind swept off the harbor. The city skyline shimmered beneath them like fallen stars, cold and indifferent.

Clara set the plush white bunny on a marble ledge. It was the only item she had rescued from Ethan’s apartment—a simple souvenir from a county fair where they had once pretended to be ordinary people. Julian glanced at the toy, his expression softening by an inch before his guarded mask returned.

"It’s not a lie if we redefine the contract," Julian replied evenly. "Six months. Complete autonomy over your design workshops, full funding for your charity, and legal protection from Ethan’s family creditors who will inevitably come hunting for you. In exchange, you stand beside me as my legal spouse. No falsehoods between us in private. No games."

Clara stared into his eyes, looking for arrogance, but found only steel resolve. "And if I say no?"
"You walk out those gates alone," Julian said gently. "And Ethan spends the rest of his life believing he crushed you. Choose, Clara."
