Chapter 9 - The Cracks in the Armor

The following afternoon, Julian met Officer Miller behind an abandoned rail yard on the outskirts of the city. Miller brought two sets of high-end hotel catering uniforms, guest wristbands, and an electronic security override keycard obtained from an inside contact within the hotel’s facilities department.

"Vance brought in thirty private contractors from a private military firm called Ironwood," Miller warned, leaning against his vehicle. "They're stationed on the service elevators, the control room, and the stage wings. They aren't cops, Julian. They don't have to follow rules of engagement. If they see you, they will shoot to silence, not to arrest."

"What about the local precinct?" Julian asked.

"Rank-and-file officers are furious," Miller said with a tight grin. "The video Maya streamed from the hospital went viral on alternative channels. Over twenty million views. Cops with families are sick of covering for a billionaire who locks women in closets. If you can get the evidence onto the ballroom screens, nobody in uniform is going to raise a finger to protect Vance."

Meanwhile, back at the cabin, Clara stood before a cracked mirror. She had trimmed her tangled hair into a sharp, elegant bob. Maya had brought her a simple, fitted black dress—an understated contrast to the extravagant jewels she used to wear under Vance’s possessive gaze.

Leo stood beside her, holding her hand. "Mommy, are you scared?"

Clara knelt down, adjusting the collar of his little jacket. "A little bit, baby. But courage isn't about not being afraid. It’s about standing up even when your knees are shaking."

"Daddy’s going to protect you," Leo said with absolute childhood conviction.

Clara smiled softly, placing a hand on his cheek. "Daddy’s going to help us, Leo. But we’re going to protect each other."
