Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Power

By daybreak, the media storm had made landfall.
Julian stood outside the hospital lobby watching the wall-mounted television screens. Cable news tickers scrolled relentlessly: TECH MOGUL CARTER VANCE ALLEGES DOMESTIC ABDUCTION BY DISHONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERAN. Vance’s PR machine had mobilized overnight. Pristine family portraits of Vance, Clara, and Leo were splashed across national networks, painting Vance as a devoted stepfather whose troubled, mentally unstable wife had been lured away by a vengeful ex-husband.
"They're controlling the narrative," said Maya Lin, stepping beside Julian. Maya was a relentless civil rights attorney and Julian’s only trusted ally in the state capital. She handed him a paper coffee cup, her face set in grim lines.
"Vance owns two news networks and has board seats on the third," Julian muttered, watching his own military record being dissected on live television. "He’s framing this as an aggravated kidnapping."
"He’s already filed an emergency injunction for custody of Leo," Maya warned. "He claims Clara is unfit due to psychiatric breakdown and that you represent an imminent violent threat. Judge Sterling signed the temporary order twenty minutes ago. Child Protective Services and state troopers are en route to this hospital right now to seize the boy."
Julian felt the blood rush to his ears. "Sterling is in Vance’s pocket."
"Of course he is. But the law doesn't care about backroom bribes until you prove them in court. Right now, on paper, you’re an armed interloper who assaulted security guards to take a child from his legal guardian."
Julian turned back toward the ICU wing. Through the glass, he saw Clara trying to sip a cup of warm broth while Leo colored a hospital intake sheet with a stubby blue crayon. They looked fragile, completely defenseless against the colossal machine bearing down on them.

"I promised Leo his mother was coming home," Julian said quietly. "I didn't break chains off a steel door just to hand him over to men in tailored suits."
"Then we have to stop playing defense," Maya said. "Where is the leverage?"
