Chapter 2 - The Cold Light of Mercy

St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and cheap industrial coffee. Julian sat on a plastic waiting room chair, his knuckles stained with faint streaks of rust and sweat from the basement chain. Leo had finally fallen asleep in the adjacent triage bay, exhausted from hours of terror, his hand still gripping Clara’s hospital gown even in slumber.
Dr. Aris, a seasoned trauma physician with tired eyes, stepped out from behind the curtain, clipboard in hand.
"She’s severely malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from acute vitamin deficiency," Aris said in a hushed tone. "Her wrists have friction burns consistent with mechanical restraints. But physically... she will recover. It’s the neurological toll I’m worried about. Prolonged confinement alters the brain's stress response. She flinches every time the fluorescent lights buzz."
"Will she be able to speak to the district attorney?" Julian asked bluntly.
"Not today. Maybe not tomorrow." Dr. Aris looked directly at Julian. "Whoever kept her down there wasn't just hiding her. They were methodically breaking her will."
Julian walked quietly into the room. Clara was awake, staring at the saline bag dripping steadily into her IV line. When Julian sat beside her, she didn't flinch away.
"He made me sign something, Julian," she whispered, her voice like crushed dry leaves. "Three days ago. He said if I signed over the family trust—the shares my father left for Leo—he’d let me walk out the front door."
"Did you sign it?"
Clara looked at him, tears welling in the corners of her eyes, but underneath the agony, a spark of stubborn defiance flickered. "I signed the top three disclosure forms. But when he handed me the irrevocable trust deed... I swallowed the signet seal ring. The one with the digital ledger key. He tore the room apart looking for it. He didn't know I swallowed it."

Julian stared at her in disbelief, a slow, solemn respect washing over him. "You risked your life for a string of code?"
"No," Clara murmured, resting her hand gently on Leo’s sleeping forehead. "I risked my life so my son wouldn't inherit Carter Vance’s world."
