Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Mask

Before the guard could draw his weapon, Julian struck with lethal military precision. He deflected the guard’s arm, drove an open palm into his chin, and swept the second contractor’s legs out from under him before they could call out on their radios. Julian dragged both unconscious men into an electrical closet, securing the door with a plastic zip-tie.

"Maya, you're clear," Julian breathed into his comms.

"Patching in... three, two, one. Broadcast is locked," Maya replied.

At that moment, the lights in the main ballroom dimmed. A spotlight converged on Carter Vance as he mounted the podium to thunderous applause. Vance smoothed his tie, smiling warmly at the cheering crowd, raising his hands in practiced humility.

"Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests," Vance began, his voice resonant through the surround-sound system. "Leadership is not about privilege. It is about stewardship. It is about protecting the most vulnerable among us..."

Suddenly, the screen behind him flickered.

The portrait of Vance vanished. In its place appeared high-resolution photographs of the reinforced steel door, the heavy chains, and the bloodstained mattress in the basement vault. Then came the audio—clear, chilling, and reverberating through the banquet hall.

"You will sign the transfer, Clara," Vance’s recorded voice boomed through the speakers. "No one is looking for you. You don't exist anymore. Your boy will call someone else mother by Christmas."

The room froze. Champagne glasses stopped halfway to mouths. The cheerful music died instantly. Vance spun around, his face draining of color, staring at his own darkest sins projected forty feet high before the entire state elite.

"Cut the feed!" Vance screamed, dropping his polished demeanor entirely. "Security! Cut the goddamn power!"
