Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Blood

In a sterile private room on the hospital’s secure floor, Dr. Aris held up a small, sterilized metal container. Inside lay a dull gold ring with a microscopic titanium USB port embedded into the underside of the family crest.

"X-rays confirmed it passed safely without perforation," Dr. Aris noted quietly, closing the door behind him. "Whatever is on that chip, Vance was willing to kill for it."

Julian plugged the encrypted drive into Maya’s air-gapped laptop. The screen flashed black, then bloomed into cascading lines of green forensic code. Clara leaned forward from the bed, her knuckles white against the bedrail.

"My father didn't just leave money in that trust," Clara explained, her breathing shallow. "He was Vance’s founding partner thirty years ago. Before he died in that staged car wreck, he found out what Vance was really building beneath the tech firm’s philanthropic shell."

Maya’s fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing secondary decryption layers. Folders unfurled: offshore bank accounts, municipal procurement kickbacks, and non-disclosure agreements with city council members. But the deepest folder was labeled Project Aegis.

"It’s an automated municipal surveillance backdoor," Maya whispered, scrolling through blueprints and encrypted audio recordings. "Vance sold the city a subsidized traffic-monitoring network, but it was tapped directly into domestic communications. He used it to blackmail every city judge, the district attorney, and the chief of police. That’s why nobody would look for you, Clara. Whenever someone filed a missing person inquiry, Vance’s algorithm intercepted it and flagged the case as inactive."

Julian stared at the monitor. The magnitude of the monster they were fighting wasn't just wealth—it was absolute systemic control.

"This isn't just about custody anymore," Julian said, his eyes darkening. "This is an empire built on extortion."

Just then, the heavy double doors at the end of the ward banged open. Heavy tactical boots echoed down the hallway.
