Chapter 12 - Standing in the Light

The double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung wide open.
Clara Vance walked down the center aisle. She was flanked by Maya Lin and Officer Miller, who wore his full dress uniform adorned with medals of valor. Clara’s head was held high, her posture regal and unbroken, walking with a calm grace that commanded absolute silence.
Guests gasped, parting like the Red Sea before her. Cameras that had been pointed at the podium swiveled around, flashbulbs exploding across her face.
Vance stood frozen at the podium, gripping the edges of the wood until his knuckles turned white. "Clara... you’re ill. You need medical attention. Security, escort my wife back to her medical team—"
"I am not your wife anymore, Carter," Clara’s voice rang out, clear, melodic, and completely devoid of fear.
She reached into her small purse, pulled out her gold wedding band, and tossed it onto the polished stage floor. The small metallic ring clinked against the wood, rolling until it stopped at Vance’s polished Italian leather shoes.
"For six months you told me no one would hear my cries through reinforced concrete," Clara continued, stepping toward the stage under the unrelenting glare of media cameras. "You told me that money bought silence, that power made you untouchable. But truth doesn't need an army, Carter. It just needs one person brave enough to turn on the lights."

From the back of the room, Julian appeared at the head of the aisle. With him were two federal marshals and the state’s Deputy Attorney General.
The Deputy Attorney General held up a red-sealed document. "Carter Vance, by order of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for federal wiretapping, public corruption, and aggravated kidnapping. Step away from the podium."
